Inspiration: Metal Kanzashi

June 2, 2017

Kanzashi are things you stick in your hair. They vary in detail from simple sticks (and yes, I have seen actual Japanese people with short chopsticks in their hair, Rachel can back me on that!) to elaborate things.

I thought I’d post some of the antique metal one’s I’ve found (and sadly lost the bidding wars on). These are all made from various metals, and often feature things like coral beads. They dangle and make tinkling noises when worn, from all the little pieces hanging off of them.

The more elaborate they are, obviously, the more formal they were, and probably the richer you are for wearing them.

This one has brass, copper, and tin for the flowers, and the center are coral beads.

Also remember, coral is endangered and can’t be harvested any more. I don’t even know if it’s possible to bring it into many countries, even as part of antiques.

This one is neat because it has the wire work crane on it, too! I also really like this “U” pin style, it’s easy to keep in your hair, although more prone to twisting when you put it in, if you have thick hair like mine 🙁

I really, really tried to win this one, but alas, too expensive for my blood. I have to say, I don’t see the ring that the pieces are all dangling from too often, and I like the way it makes it hang like rain.

Also, there is a good chance this was a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) piece, as the dangles are the butterfly motif you often see associated with them.

And finally, a more modern enameled metal hairpin, a bit more casual!

I hope these images inspire you in your artistic endeavors, especially in creating really unique and beautiful characters :3
