Wisteria

May 19, 2017

In light of terrible allergies (or maybe a cold, but I’m guessing allergies), I started designing my next embroidery project.

I have been creating a compilation of traditional Japanese motifs, mon (family crests), and background patterns you often find in kimono, and I decided to put them together into a few designs. This one is the one I’ll be working on next: wisteria.

Wisteria bloom around this time in my part of Japan, early to mid May. They smell wonderful, and are home to an absolute ton of bumble bees. There are trellised walkways and coverings everywhere, growing with vines that have gotten so big they’re like tree trunks. It’s a great place to go have a can of coffee and relax.

The background for this embroidery will be a muted gold, with a darker shade behind it. I already have the purples for the wisteria, and the light yellow for the cord.

I’m unsure of the stitch types so far, but I’m thinking I’m going to have to do something more textured for the gold pieces, so it isn’t too long of stitches for satin stitches. The cords, obviously, will be a cord stitch. I’m not sure on the size this will be, either – I’m thinking maybe about 3″ (7.5cm) wide.

Gonna try to go get the thread for this this weekend (along with new needles, the one’s I’m using are really dull and worn), but I thought I’d post an update with the designs.
